What Is an ALR Projector Screen?

An ALR projector screen is a directional projection surface designed to reject some unwanted room light while reflecting useful projector light toward the audience. “Reject” does not mean the material absorbs all room light; it means the optical structure treats light from different directions differently.

How ALR differs from a white screen

A matte-white screen tries to reflect projector light broadly and evenly. That simplicity is excellent in a controlled dark room, but the same diffuse behavior also reflects room light toward viewers. ALR materials add optical directionality so that some off-angle light is redirected away from the audience.

Common ALR structures

Lenticular surfaces use microscopic rib-like structures. Fresnel surfaces use concentric optical patterns. Angular-reflective screens rely on controlled reflection geometry. Marketing language varies, and some products blend approaches.

The trade-offs

  • Potentially better perceived contrast with lights on
  • Possible brightness loss on lower-gain materials
  • More sensitivity to projector height/angle
  • Possible hotspotting or non-uniformity

How to judge ALR honestly

Ask where the room's unwanted light comes from. A screen that rejects overhead light well may not reject a lamp behind the audience equally well. Then ask whether the projector sits where the screen expects. Geometry is the core of ALR performance.

CLR usually means ceiling-light rejecting and is a subset/marketing variant of ambient-light-rejecting concepts, often emphasizing overhead-light control.
