Best depends on the constraint you are solving. A bright room, wide sofa, ceiling-mounted projector, RGB-laser speckle sensitivity and need for a retractable screen can all point in different directions.

This guide does not pretend every screen was tested by Screen Signal. Manufacturer specs are labeled, and independent 2026 testing is attributed where it informs the shortlist.

What 2026 independent testing adds

The Hook Up's 2026 ten-screen comparison is useful because it tested multiple standard-throw materials under the same review framework. It reported strong ALR and speckle behavior from Valerion Fresnel, very strong measured brightness/ALR from VIVIDSTORM Fusion but objectionable speckle/hotspotting in that setup, and close measured/microscope similarities among NothingProjector's lenticular long-throw material, Spectra Shadowscape and Screen Innovations Black Diamond Fusion.

Those findings do not replace room-specific testing. They do, however, reinforce two points: marketing gain/ALR numbers do not always match independent measurement, and laser-speckle behavior can be a decisive variable with RGB-laser projectors.

How to choose without overfitting to a ranking

  1. Confirm long-throw compatibility.
  2. Set the final screen size and projector throw distance.
  3. Identify whether brightness, ambient light, wide seating or retractability is the main constraint.
  4. Check independent tests for your projector technology, especially RGB-laser speckle.
  5. Use samples where possible.
  6. Compare full-system cost only after optical fit.
